This is why I think a Gedmatch utility that allows you to detect matches on specific chromosome locations would be useful. So, think we need to pursue all avenues and in some cases, some of our more recent ancestors may never be identified as to paper trails connecting us to one another. Also, that maybe some of our closer matches will be very difficult to identify if they were the wandering types who lived in places where the records are sparse or non-existant.
Maybe your distant matches can tell you something you do not know. This is all to say that people should not discount distant matches. Paternal grandmother, gaps due to missing records back to Germany/Switzerland. Maternal grandfather, likewise, but many gaps.
