This is why I think a Gedmatch utility that allows you to detect matches on specific chromosome locations would be useful. So, think we need to pursue all avenues and in some cases, some of our more recent ancestors may never be identified as to paper trails connecting us to one another. Also, that maybe some of our closer matches will be very difficult to identify if they were the wandering types who lived in places where the records are sparse or non-existant.

Maybe your distant matches can tell you something you do not know. This is all to say that people should not discount distant matches. Paternal grandmother, gaps due to missing records back to Germany/Switzerland. Maternal grandfather, likewise, but many gaps.
#Why are all my dna matches 4th cousin full#
Well, duh, I think the answer, at least in my case, is in the full and the broken branches in my trees.Įxamining my trees, back to my 4th great grandparents = 4 x 16 grandparents, I am missing:Ĥ as to family of my maternal grandmother, all females.Ħ as to my maternal grandfather, mix of females and males.īoth of these lines are 2 of my earliest American lines and the people who are missing are missing in their wanderings in their migrations between NC, TN, KY, AR and so on, the ones on my maternal grandfather side missing more as they wandered more.ġ as to my paternal grandmother whose family were German/Swiss immigrants and most recent immgrants though also Colonial.ġ as to paternal grandfather whose family were also among the earliest, and missing person a German ancestor in a line that is otherwise of UK descent.ĭocumentation and identification as to how I match my cousins further back in time is easiest for my maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather, whose lines have otherwise, been traced back to very early Colonial families. I have noted where people do not pursue distant cousin relationships sometimes and have wondered why? Often, my predicted 3rd to 5th cousins have proven more didtant and often I have not been able to find a connection to other 3rd to 5th cousins at all and sometimes I have been able to connect to predicted distant cousins, easily. The title of this post is not totally correct.
